Anglesey Food Guide: Best Local Produce and Seasonal Menus

As summer draws to a close and we shift into the autumnal days of September (searching optimistically for any clues pointing towards an Indian summer), we’re filled with gratitude for the incredible season we’ve had. It's taken dedication from a committed team to not only launch our Guest Chef Series but to also establish Y Marram as one of the standout places to eat on Anglesey with the Friday to Sunday menus.

We unashamedly aim to make Y Marram the best place to eat on Anglesey (what eatery wouldn't), and to that end, we are prioritising working with local farmers, small-scale producers, and fishermen to find and access the best local and seasonal produce to base our menu, which we will continue to do across autumn and winter.

That being said, as much as we can claim that Y Marram can satisfy the desires of the discerning Food Tourist in search of an understated, off-the-beaten-track restaurant, we also appreciate that eating alone cannot satisfy the appetite of an avid foodie. For Ynys Mon to truly be a foodie destination, there really ought to be places to visit and learn about the produce firsthand.

We get so many food-related questions from our diners, such as where can we get local produce on Anglesey? Or where can we get local seafood? And where should foodies visit on Anglesey? So here is our brief nod to some of the local producers that have supported Y Marram this year:

Where’s the local produce?

Y Marram

Opposite Y Marram, we have set up a community allotment that provides produce to the restaurant. The project is in its infancy so we are excited by the continued improvements and that it is actually providing produce! We’re not selling to the general public but do feel free to have a nosy.

Menai Oysters, dwyran

Located in the Menai Strait, Menai Oysters are renowned for their fresh, succulent oysters and mussels. These oysters are sustainably farmed, ensuring that they are not only delicious but also environmentally friendly. A visit to their farm offers a unique opportunity to see the oyster farming process up close and even sample some of the freshest oysters you’ll ever taste.

You’ll also have the opportunity to taste their range of flavored salts and other products.

Llanfairpwll Distillery, Gaerwen

Gaerwen is home to a distillery that produces a range of spirits, including gin and whiskey. Using local botanicals and traditional distilling methods, they create spirits that capture the essence of Anglesey. A visit to the distillery includes a tour of the facilities, an explanation of the distilling process, and a tasting session.

Steve Bass (Fisherman), Bodorgan

A local fisherman who singlehandedly provides Y Marram with the beautiful line caught seabass from the West Coast of Anglesey.

Watch Ellis hosting a workshop over at Porth Penrhyn. Ste doesn’t sell his fish directly but you can buy fresh fish from The Menai Seafood Company, who are based down at the port:

Thank you to all of our guests as well; your continued support makes everything we do worthwhile. Here’s to a wonderful autumn and beyond!
